IMSTA Award – Congratulations to the Maternity Unit at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda
15th January, 2020
The Implementation of the Growth Assessment Protocol for the earlier Recognition and Detection of Babies that are Growth Restricted.
Small for Gestation Age (SGA) is a recognised cause of stillbirth (SB) and neonatal morbidity and mortality. If recognised and acted upon, SB due to SGA may be avoided. GAP is a systematic approach to the antenatal recognition and detection of SGA babies which has been shown to be associated with a reduction in stillbirth rates and has led to the recommendation that customised growth charts should be used.
In 2017, we introduced the Growth Assessment Protocol (GAP) (Perinatal Institute UK) with a view to improving our antenatal detection rate of SGA and thereby hopefully reduce our stillbirth rate.
The project has seen the units Perinatal Mortality Rate drop to its lowest ever and below the national average.
Congratulations to all involved.
